Klan Klan (Micron)
Macross Frontier
Inspiration: My friend Meru was telling me I really needed to check out this show, but I took my time getting around to it because I’m not that into giant mech shows, which is what I thought the Macross series was all about. When I finally got around to watching it I regretted waiting so long. Sure the mechs were there, but the animation was so beautiful and action packed that I actually really enjoyed it. My cosplay choice was a toss up between Klan and Nanase, but I went with Klan because she was so spunky and cute and I loved her hair style.
Materials/Construction Details: Making Klan’s jumper was a challenge for me because I had never made anything remotely similar. I ended up making several mock-ups before I got it right. The body of the jumper had to be skin tight, but the bottom around the legs needed to have a poof to it, so I had to bell out the pattern starting at the hip and then gather the extra material at the bands around the leg. The jacket was a much easier task and is made out of black and maroon suiting. I did have a difficult time finding gold piping though and was very close to just making my own before I found some that would work on the Internet.
To make the leggings I started with lavender thigh highs from We Love Colors and some white wedge shoes. Cutting the thigh highs at the toe, I stretched them and glued them down around the edges of the shoes so that just the white wedges were showing. I then measured my thighs carefully and cut the white zig-zag part out, reinforcing it with thick interfacing so it wouldn’t flop and would be tight around my thigh. I pinned the top of the thigh highs along the inside base of the white part (stretching it where necessary) and then sewed it in place.
There are a lot of other minor components to this costume: ribbons, gold snaps, pink bows, SMS logos, and of course the pointy ears (a highlight of the costume for me).
Wig: This wig is one of the most irritating wigs I’ve ever worn! I love how it looks, especially the blend of blues used to give it its color, but you can just look at it and see how awkward and heavy it is. The wig is a short base wig with two clip-ons for the short pigtails and two extremely long extensions for the longer tails. The long tails only came with a single toupee clip on each and that was in no way enough to keep that much hair attached. I had a very difficult time with it at first, but Samu-chan showed me how she had gotten her Klan wig to work since she had been through the exact same thing. With the toupee clips removed, the end of the long extensions could be wedged into the claw clip of the smaller pig tails and still be able to be clipped firmly to the netting of the wig. Regardless, those long pigtails needed to be held while moving around and brushed out constantly.
