Ygritte
Game of Thrones
Inspiration: I have been a huge fan of this series since I read the books years ago and I have always wanted to cosplay as Ygritte. When the show came out, I patiently waited for her reveal in season 2 and then I started plotting. September in Atlanta might not have been the greatest venue for wearing this costume for the first time, but I really wanted to wear it with the large Game of Thrones costume gathering at Dragon*Con! I’m already planning on a rewear once winter comes.
Materials/Construction Details: This costume was my most paint intensive costume to date. I used a trenchcoat pattern for the coat and modified it to have jagged edges and a hood. I used pre-distressed seude and lined it with fur using fabric glue. Once I had all my pieces cut out, I laid them out and started the painting process. I filled a squirt bottle with white fabric paint and water until the substance was able to be sprayed evenly in a mist. I then went over all the pieces with the squirt bottle spraying more in some areas, and less in others. I then took a sponge and blotted here and there with more fabric paint until I was satified with the snowiness.
Once the paint dried, I sewed all the pieces together. I then cut large slashes on the coat across the front, back, hood, and sleeves and sewed them closed with the fur from the back showing in the front. I stitched over those areas with leather cording in a large sloppy stitch pattern. The next step was to add the fur cuffs on the sleeves and hood and then to go back over all the fur parts with a sponge and white fabric paint. I also dusted the fur with a little flour while the paint was still wet for effect. I made the belt that goes across her shoulders out of the same painted distressed seude and even sponge painted the buckle a bit.
I bought the boots, seude pants, and leather gloves and gave them the same snowy treatment using the squirt bottle and sponge painting. I had to add the fur seams and cuff to the gloves. I also made strips of cloth out of gauze that I wrapped around my legs at the base of the pants and thigh.
Wig: Since Ygritte’s hair in the show is pulled back on the top, I opted to use a lace front wig so I would have a more natural hair line. This particular wig came to me super curly, so I straightened it a little bit by pouring hot water over it and letting it dry. I left some of the curl to it for a more ‘wild look’.
Such a beautiful Ygritte cosplay! *-*
I’m currently gathering courage to start my own, but I can’t find a good lace front wig… Would you mind telling me where did you get yours? Because it is the best one I’ve seen.
Again, congratulations on your cosplay :3
Hey! I’ve been admiring your Ygritte for awhile, and I really want to make her for the upcoming con in January. Do you remember what pattern you used?
