Ritsu Tainaka ~ Fuwa Fuwa Time Kimono
K-On!
Inspiration: This is my seventh Ritsu costume and there’s still a couple more on my list I want to do. These cute, fluffy kimonos have been on my wish list for some time and I finally got around to making mine. In the near future some of the other HHT members will be joining me for a shoot.
Materials/Construction Details: I made the majority of this costume out of kona cotton from JoAnn’s. I followed a kimono pattern for everything above the obi and attached a circle skirt to the bottom so that it would be fuller and could have a petticoat under it. I trimmed the sleeves and front of the kimono with white costume fur also purchased at JoAnn’s. The orange spots were appliqued on and satin stitched down with a lighter orange.
I used cotton with a layer of thick interfacing for the obi, appliquing the green parts on and satin stitching in a lighter thread color around the edges. I made the bow with a layer of fusible interfacing and a thin layer of batting to give it some puffiness. I simply sewed the bow onto the obi and used hook and eyes to close it around my waist.
I purchased orange platform flipflops online, painted the thong to match the main color of the obi, and then glued the yellow pompoms on.
Wig: I’m still using the same Ritsu wig after all this time. It’s definitely my most worn wig!
