Elmindreda “Min” Farshaw
The Wheel of Time
Inspiration: I put off reading The Wheel of Time for a long time because it would be such a commitment considering the length of the series, but once I started I couldn’t stop. It is now one of my all time favorite fantasy series. Atlanta has a local Wheel of Time convention called JordanCon. I knew I wanted to go and I wanted to dress up, so I considered the hundreds of characters there were to choose from and decided on Min. Min is definitely one of my favorite female characters and one I can really relate with as someone who also grew up as a tomboy and doesn’t really feel all that comfortable in dresses.
Materials/Construction Details: Most pieces in this costume were modified. I bought the coat on ebay, even though is was many sizes too big, I just liked the color and pattern. Once it arrived, I took apart all the seams, cut it down to fit me well, and put it back together. I also added pleats and other details with fancy buttons to the back of the coat. Once I was done with the construction, I dyed the coat to make it a little brighter and then added the white ruffles to the coat sleeves.
The patterned pants were a lucky find. I simply had to dye them the appropriate color. I put together the belt using two different belts from a thrift shop since I liked the leather pattern on one and the buckle on another. I also bought the boots from ebay, but added all the white embroidery on the cuffs myself.
Wig: I got the wig off ebay, and though it’s a little darker than I hoped, I do find the shoulder length ringlets the perfect style for Min!
Prop: I bought a fake, hollowed out book from Michaels, which I put my wallet, phone, and keys in while at the con so I wouldn’t have to carry a bag with me and could still have an appropriate prop.
